Into Character

I wrote a newsletter about 3 years ago that I was getting into role-playing games, namely Dungeons and Dragons, and I recently started playing another campaign with a great group of people.

What I love about D&D is that it gives you so many, "What-If" scenarios! It's like a "Choose Your Own Adventure" game with other players! That's one of the really fun things about the Interactive Story and Campfire Creatives that we have here at Writing.com.

One thing I've learned about writers is that we often collect characters in our minds. Some writers are inspired by a setting, an idea, a plot device, etc., but often we have characters in our heads that we'll one day use in a story or novel or poem. Dungeons and Dragons is a great way to use a character like that and Writing.com Contests are another way!

My challenge to you is to find a contest with a prompt and taken one of those characters you've created and see how they'd fit into that prompt. Use it as a "What-If" exercise for your character! It can help you flesh out their traits and mannerisms, or they might just surprise you and do the unexpected! (My characters tend to be unexpected and won't do what I want. Stubborn things!)

Also, be on the lookout in your everyday life for characters. While waiting in line (and aren't we always waiting in lines or waiting rooms?), take a look/listen around and see if anyone inspires your next character!

As always, keep on writing!
