Participants (and Judges) are People, too!
When you put yourself in the role of judge/host of a contest or activity, sometimes a switch can happen. It can become more of an experience of technicalities and judgment, which it should. But it's also good to remember that the participant is a person with feelings.
Remember what it felt like the first time you entered a writing contest? It can be pretty scary to put yourself out there by taking the risk of exposing your work. Perhaps it's the double-edged sword of wanting to be a writer. You can't succeed without baring yourself and your work for others to see.
So try to remember that participants have feelings while you're judging. Be honest but try to be kind in reviews. Remember to thank participants (because without them, you'd be out of a job!) and particularly in reviewing, point out the positives along with the negatives.
And a word to participants: Judges have feelings, too! In both cases, mistakes can be made. We're all human, after all. I know for a fact that I've missed deadlines or forgot a review when one was promised. The important thing is to make up for it when you can and remember what that was like if it happens to you!
Whether your goal is to hone your writing skills or just to have fun, the entire process can work more smoothly with compassion, I think.
PS - It's almost WDC's 18th Birthday! Keep an eye out for all kinds of fun things to do around the site!!
As always, keep on writing!

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (August 1, 2018)" ), tips for judging. Here is some feedback from last week's Newsletter readers:
Dear Spidey,
As some may know I have newly acquired and I just had my first contest. I made the mistake of thinking that I had to have all of the reviews and announcement of the winners by the first of the month.
In that respect I didn't catch the last entry. Which I feel really bad, I had looked but didn't see it. I'd been traveling and having wifi issues. I should have postponed the announcements until I was home and settled in. I have learned a very valuable lesson and pray that I never miss another. We all work hard at what we do and I appreciate everyone here. It breaks my heart that I thought I had to get it done by that day.
Your letter was very comforting to know that I can have more time. I will be putting a time limit on the announcements and never be in a hurry again. I pray that the author I miss will return.
Thank you for writing this newsletter, it really helped and I hope that everyone reads it.
May you be blessed always,
Teresa
Thanks for the lovely feedback and best of luck with your contest!
