Controversial Topics
Everyone has their idea of "normal". But what your normal is, or what you like to think about and do, can be vastly different from others. In the last decade, a big topic is gender orientation and attraction. But there are a lot of topics out there that we write about that can cause inflammatory feelings. At Writing.com, you can write about most anything, as long as you rate it properly. As a result, there is a lot of erotica and fetish writing, among other things, available for consumption.
When a reader finds something to read, they only have the title and the brief description to go by, unless the item is posted on the "The Shameless "Plug" Page" , with a blurb to clue the reader in. Or readers can search by topic. Now, suppose they're not just logged in to be a troll, they find an item to read and the topic or the story creates heightened feelings. This can possibly spill over into their review. Instead of commenting on the technical part of the review, they choose to tell you - the author - that the narration is incorrect or offends them. Some reviewers rate accordingly.
Over the years, it's happened to me a few times. And yes, when you get a one star when you only have a review or two on your item, it can hurt your item's rating. But if you're a long term member, you know that the more reviews and ratings you have on an item, the less influence the one star has on the overall rating.
Maybe the reviewer says some nasty things. There it is, out on the public pages for everyone to see. Or the review is nonsensical and irrelevant. You can make an offensive review private in My Account > My Activity > Reviews and Feedback > in the header of the review, Access > Hide Review.
Just remember, opinions are like ears, everyone has a few and some of them are pretty darn ugly...so just Write On!
This month's question: If you're an author of controversial topics, are you offended by hypersensitive reviews?
How do you respond to the reviewer?

Excerpt: This is where the sun set the day they brought destruction. I remember it quite clearly because it all fell just last night. I suppose the sun went down everywhere, but here it meant much more. It meant the tribes were coming to destroy everything my people had loved. We built it with our own hands after our people suffered long and hard for freedoms we were owed. Our backs ached, our fingers bled, and the stone resisted the change but it gave in and gave us a place of our own.
Excerpt: Despite the growling behind the door, Marv smiled and knocked again. “Open up, Kat. We won’t bite.”
“Leave.” Her voice was faint, muffled by door and walls and snarls. “While you still can.”
Marv turned to thrust a thumbs-up at Hank. “And you thought she wouldn’t be here.”
Excerpt: Perhaps, guilt was the reason that Ed suggested we stayed in that house in the first place. It was our tribute to Jesse who always wanted to be a part of a horror story. Even if the four of us weren't friends per se, we couldn't go on without paying our respects. Or perhaps, we were trying to cling to false hopes..
Excerpt: "Stop it," Ruby muttered, turning over on to her left side. "Stop it." But the rattling did not stop. She opened her eyes. The rattling seemed to be coming from somewhere above her. "My ceiling fan doesn't make a noise," she thought, recognising the source or the sound. She turned on to her back, to look up at it. "When did I get such a soft mattress?"

Excerpt: "You know I love you baby."
It was early evening on Halloween, and Ryan was trying to hold back tears, sniffling as he spoke.
"You'd like her, babe. You really would. She's so nice. She works in that big jewelry shop down on the corner of Main Street. She's super shy too, just like you. I think you two would hit it off and be really good friends if... things were different. She's good to me."
Excerpt: New York looks especially beautiful when you’re looking down from the top of the Empire State building. You can see everything during the night: flashes of lights from all the skyscrapers across the city, the bright yellow cabs that seemed to be at a standstill, hundreds, if not thousands, of people walking the streets just trying to get somewhere. Just trying to live their lives.
Unlike them, I wasn’t trying to live mine.
Excerpt: "This is one treat I am not going to share with anyone!"
I looked at Natasha, or Natie for short, and gave her a broad smile.
"Have as much as you want, my dear," I said between guffaws. I laid my notebook aside and got off my seat. Approaching this angelic girl, I placed my hand on her shoulder and pressed it reassuringly.
"Uncle, you are so ... er ... fantastic! I mean, like out of this world." She licked at the ice cream cone and laughed.
Excerpt: Flash fiction is fun to read and a challenge to write. It must contain all the elements of a larger work of fiction, but in a much shorter space.
Excerpt: Hello and welcome! This forum is designed to get your creative juices flowing. 10,000 gps will be given away every 24 hours!
Excerpt: On Monday, post your goals for the week and we'll send you 1,000 Gift Points

Answer below Editors love feedback!
Last month's question: Do you like finding ways to add interesting content to interactives?
Which are some of your favorites??
BIG BAD WOLF is Howling answered: I was fortunate enough to make 22 interactives - and then they limited the amount the 10 - but luckily, my interactives were grandfathered into the system, although if I get an idea for a new interactive, that means deleting the chapters of one that didn't do so well, and then renaming it (along with a few other things), in order to create a "new" interactive.
Still, always fun to do, and I hope to add to plenty more in the future.
