December Poems
Poems Written in December 2013

1

I walk out the door
inhale the crisp morning air
the sun's rays warm me.

2

November over
National Novel Writing Month
2013 past

3

The countdown begun
with twenty-three days to go
I ask God for strength

4

Plan to write entries
at least every other day
depends on God's will.

5

December Monday Morning
December begun
with a bit of Sunday fun
morning prayers sung.

6

Enough gas today
to drive to the store and back
tomorrow fill tank.

7

Can December get any more depressing?
I am not
looking forward
to moving to Searchlight.

Is it the isolation?
No,
I have other reasons
not to want to go.

8

I wonder about the temperature in Searchlight,
is it colder there this morning
then here in Las Vegas.

9

The problem is isolation,
or at least the feeling of isolation.

10

Paradise
a cup of fresh brewed coffee
on a cold December morning.

11

Sunny and cold
My joints are stiff
I'm getting too old
I can hardly walk
For sunny and cold
My knuckles ache

12

Since all my friends and family
Celebrate different holidays
And different Holy Days
I wish every one
Happy Holidays.

13

he sun is setting
neighbor's are returning home
from work and shopping

14

the sun is setting
the cold day is cooling down
tomorrow hot soup

15

I want to go back to work,
for just a little while
each weekday.

I want to go back to work,
at 8:00 am
just so that I can say,
"Good morning,
Isn't it a beautiful day."

16

Saturday morning
charcoal gray clouds hide the sun:
Will it snow in the Valley?

17

a cloudy morning
foretells a chilly gray day
pain in my fingers

18

post nanowrimo
accomplishing the word count
becomes difficult

19

A cup of hot soup,
A peanut butter sandwich,
An afternoon nap,
What more could I want
On this cloudy Day?

20
On a Cold and Windy Saturday in December

On this cold and windy Saturday in December,
the ice cream truck just drove by my house.

I heard the music playing
as he approached
with all his sweet cold treats that
in summer I would buy,
but today
it is too cold for an ice cream cone.

21

Hot Soup and Hot Sauce
Hot soup
Hot sauce
Cold morning defrost

22

Another beautiful day
in Las Vegas.

I didn't see snow in my front yard
this morning,
so I didn't check the weather report.

23

My coffee mug is too big!

The coffee gets cold
before I can finish
so I'm going to find
a smaller cup.

24

Las Vegas sunset
sky fades from blue to off white
another day ends.

25

Losing my cellphone
is problem when I'm home
unless someone calls

26

My coffee cup is empty
and my day has just begun,
I think I'll pour another cup
and walk out in the sun.

27
I Wonder a poem about a dream

I looked into the morning light
and wondered
what happened in my dreams last night.

I remember walking down
a path of rose pedals releasing
their scent as I stepped on them

28

Suddenly I want to cry,
I sigh,
I don't know why I want to cry.

29

It's a cold morning
I need more soup,
and more hot sauce.

30

I used to be autumn and winter's child
then arthritis pain
became my winter affliction
now I'm
spring and summer's child.

31

I want to be warm again,
I want to walk in the summer sun
and worry about sunburn,
because I can put on enough sunscreen
to protect me from the UV rays,
but I can't put on enough clothes
to protect me from the cold.

32

Washing the morning dishes
the hot soapy water felt so good
that I almost thought
it was summer
again.

33

December blessing:
May the snow on your front walk melt quickly.

34
Another Year Almost Gone

Another year almost gone,
I look back
and wonder at what I've done.

What did I accomplish in 2013?

Tonight,
I'm not sure
if I accomplished anything,
but I know I must have
did something
worth remembering
during 2013.

35

Saturday morning!

The medication taken,
laundry done
(but still in dryer),
first breakfast
of chocolate cake
and coffee,
trash rolled to curb,
Facebook status updated,
third cup of coffee finished,
the only thing left
is to decide what
I want for my second breakfast
and if I really want/need
to go to grocery store.

Saturday morning!

Saturday Review of My Week in Free Verse

A week
without printing my "To Do List":
What did I forget to do?

I think,
I took my medication
everyday.

I know
I didn't make my word count goal
everyday.

I remembered
to keep my doctor's appointment on Thursday afternoon,
to attend the Feast of Questions on Thursday evening,
and to go to the food pantry on Friday morning.

Because
I didn't make
or print a daily "To Do List"
I think I forgot
to do something;
therefore,
I need to make the list today
and then print it out
on a daily basis.

37
Saturday Morning Thoughts: December 14, 2013

Another weary morning,
after a short
and semi-sleepless night;
maybe,
another couple of prayers,
a second breakfast
(with a bite of protein)
and some more coffee
will make
the rest of the day right.

Another weary morning,
with a list of chores
that can't
be left undone -
perhaps
I should consider
an afternoon nap
or a walk in winter's
warm sun.

38

Sunday morning
medication taken,
fresh coffee brewed,
first breakfast
of baked yams
and sweet potatoes enjoyed,
yesterday's laundry dried,
breakfast dishes washed,
and now
I need to check my "To Do List".

39
A Good Beginning to a New Writing Week

It's a good beginning
to a new week of writing;
today's "To Do List" waiting
for me to mark off
another accomplishment.

The dishes are washed
and drying by the sink;
I still have to finalize
Monday's "To Do List",
I have to decide
whether to remain home
or go to pick up food.

40

On Monday morning
clouds gather into large herds
sheep-like in the west.

41
A Blue Monday Afternoon

It's a blue Monday afternoon,
with a partly cloudy sky,
a day to remain at home
and complete
unfinished tasks.

42

wisp of scattered clouds
decorates afternoon's sky
chilly a slight breeze

43

Eight days
and counting down
to another birthday:
Do I need a night
on the town?

44

There was a man names Santa Claus,
Who always inserted a pregnant pause,
Before he made this simple request,
"Have you been naughty or nice?" he ask.

45

There was a reindeer named Dancer,
Who was really quite a prancer,
Until he took a sip of eggnog,
Then he would stumble in a snow fog.

46

There was an elf by the name of Randy,
Who was a handsome little dandy,
With all the girl elves he was handy,
While giving them peals and chocolate flavored brandy.

47

Thursday morning
the chicken quarters
are thawed,
three are cooking in the skillet,
but I have to cook them all
before refreezing.

48

All Day in the Kitchen
I spent all day in the kitchen
cooking my fingers to the bone
and what thanks to I get
especially since I am alone.

49

Saturday morning,
it seems like Friday;
I took the trash out anyway,
I hope this is trash collection day.

50

You know you're getting old when
you walk across the room
and the squeaking you hear
is your joints
not the floorboards.

51

An old year is dying,
a New Year is being born,
it's time for a change
in attitude.

52

Monday morning
on the eve of my birthday.

It's amazing,
it's scary
just how swiftly
67 years pass.

53
On the Eve of My Birthday: A Poem

It's odd,
but I don't remember
Las Vegas winters
being this cold.

I check the thermostat,
it reads
56 degrees;
that's not cold.

I check weather.com
and it tells me
the morning temperature outside
is around 43 degrees,
but it felt warmer
when I took out the trash.

Maybe
it's my upcoming birthday;

I'll turn 67
on December 24.

I need a vacation,
to a tropical paradise
where I can sit on the beach
watching the waves roll in
and forget about the
cold chilly
desert winters.

54
A Bird Outside My Window: A Poem

There's a bird outside my window
singing happily,
he must not feel cold,
so perhaps my chilly feeling
comes from being old
rather then the cold.

55

The scent of wood smoke
wafting through the neighborhood
suburban Christmas.

56

Nightingale singing
outside my kitchen window
Las Vegas Christmas

57

Garbage trucks rolling
through the neighborhood even
on a holiday

58

t is not the tree
or the blinking light that make
a Merry Christmas.

59

looking at the year
and at the difficulties
achieving my word count goal

60

writing in a rut
repeating the same actions
over and over

61

change is difficulty
requires climbing out of ruts
sometimes more then once

62

I fixed myself
hot cake and eggs for breakfast.

The first question is
"Why don't my hot cakes
look as pretty
as those my mother made?"

The second question
"How did Mama
avoid breaking the egg yolks
when she turned
the eggs in the skillet?"

63

Saturday morning
the trashcan rolled to the curb
moon shining through clouds

64

fresh dark silk coffee
its hot smooth heavenly taste
warms aching fingers

65

Facebook addiction
numerous status updates:
Am I wasting time?

66

Hot soapy water
warms my arthritic fingers
drives away the pain.

67

A New Year coming
a new residence and life
in 2014.

68
On the Last Sunday in December 2013

On the last Sunday in December
a flock of black birds
congregated
in the gutter across the street.

The pecked at the remains
left by yesterday's
garbage trucks
and then flew away
wheeling
toward the Las Vegas strip
and a more
substantial meal.

69

Grocery shopping
used to be a painful chore,
but not anymore.

I didn't get eggs,
I bought hot chocolate mix
for cafe mocha.

70

Hot cafe mocha
drives away the New Year's chill
warms body and soul.

71
2013 It Was...

2013 it was...
an interesting year
full of struggle,
of worry,
and learning about myself.

2013 it was...
a lonely year
living in Mom's house
and not wanting to do anything
except cry.

72

A New Year
will soon be here,
with new joys
welcomed by a whole lot
of noise.

Notes: The poems in this entry are also posted on my FaceBook page, on one of my offsite blogs http://poet999writingthoughts.blogspot.com/ or http://poet999.blogspot.com/, or "Poetic Insanity. I am attempting to keep track of how many haikus I write in December because it is my birth month.
