The title of this piece and the description are what brought me here. They just sparked my interest and are quite befitting for the content.

What I liked:

I really love the bigger metaphor that you employed in the piece, that of a caged person looking out at the world. I love the fact that this person is a prisoner in his/her own mind, or at least a prisoner locked in a cage of his/her own making. The bars seem to have been constructed out of fear or a lack of trust. This person chooses the safety of his/her own cage and prefers it to venturing out into the unpredictable and uncontrollable world.

What I liked most about this was the fact that I felt like I knew this person. This person seems like a keen observer of human nature, a person who listens a lot and talks only when absolutely necessary. To me, this person feels like someone who has a great understanding of others, and would be the kind of friend who would give great advice despite not having lived through much, all because he/she learned from observing others and managed to glean the knowledge off of their experiences.

This person's pain is palpable, which is a credit to your characterization abilities. I could feel the longing and despair, and yet I was vividly aware of the chains that bind.

This poem is also very well written, and I love the parallels between the verses where the narrator describes the experiences of others and those describing what he/she wishes to have.

Favorite Lines:
"I like to listen for the subtle change in inflection
when a person speaks to someone they love."
