Letter from the editor

Most of the time, when I enter a contest or a challenge here on the site, my main motivation is to have fun. Or well, my main motivation is just to write something. Still, it's rare that I have a competitive drive to win but I've never been that big on putting emphasis on an end prize. Probably why I didn't last long in team sports growing up. *shrugs* Don't get me wrong, it's fun to win. I place on occasion with the contests here and it's a surprise, nice moment every single time. I appreciate the recognition from the judge, but more than anything, I am happy to be writing.

But I know not everyone has the same motivation. So, today we are going to talk a little but the driving factor behind taking part in a challenge or for entering a contest. Later we can talk about other reasons to write that may not be all rainbows and sunshine.

Let's get this out first. Prizes are awesome! Winning is fun. We like to win and it's certainly a valid reason to enter a contest. And if there is a prize for completing a challenge, there is nothing wrong with using that prize as the main motivation. So, to have that as the reason for doing writing, reviewing, etc, that is fine. Go for it.

There is also the chance that you might want to try something new or do a challenge just for the fun factor.

Entering a contest can be fun. Maybe it's a genre, a character or even a type of item that you've never written before. Taking on that challenge can be a prize in itself because it was the opportunity to do something different. At times just making it through a difficult task or completing a challenge can be worth the effort. I feel like I'm going to use the word fun too often in this newsletter but that's okay since it's the topic. Trying a new thing can be fun even if it's not the best writing of all time.

Maybe you know the person running the challenge or contest. I like to enter ones for people I know here on WDC as a form of support, which is fun. Whether it's something I write often or not, that doesn't really matter. Though I do try to use contests to help with my novels, there are times where I just try to write something that fits a prompt in order to provide more choices or give support to an event. The WDC birthday bash can be that way too, each years. Taking part to show support for the site is more than enough of a reason to do a little writing.

And there is the kind of fun just because it's something you want to do. Want to write a novel? National Novel Writing Month is a great time to make an effort. Doesn't matter when you write 10,000 - 50,000 - 175,000 words, it all is progress on a novel. Want to do a blogging month or a month of writing poems. Go for it. You don't need a reason beyond it being something that you want to do.

The whole point here is to write and have fun.
