Letter from the editor

         I am honored to be guest host for this issue of the WDC Contests and Activities Newsletter and write to you as a fellow contestant. I hosted one themed contest last year and know it takes a lot of hard work to set up, maintain, and judge a contest. I admire those in our Community who have maintained activities of all sorts, not only contests, but in-outs, auctions, c-note shops, puzzles - well, imagine it, and you will likely find it (or perhaps create it{e:smile).

         This week, I would like to share my admiration and esteem for those who challenge the writers in our Community with high quality running/recurring contests, and/or who post and run themed contests throughout the year.*Heart*

         Before I tell you what you will find in the contests on WDC, in addition to gps and/or awardicons and/or merit badges, I will show you the one thing you will never get from a contest here at WDC

* * * * *

”We regret that we are unable to use your story/poem at this time. Although we are unable to provide individualized response, we wish you success in your future writing efforts.”

         Yes, I just paraphrased my most recent reject form letter from a publisher responding to a story I submitted*Cry*

* * * * *

         No contest host at WDC has ever to my knowledge responded in such a terse manner to any writer’s contest entry. Responses from WDC contest hosts and judges to my entries, and judges’ reviews for others I have read, all recognize and encourage, often with pointed detailed comments, pro and/or con, all entries! No form letters here! Fellow contestants also often review each others’ posted work, offering further encouragement and sometimes catching an error or nit that can be edited (if posting rules permit) before the contest closes.*Star*

         The hosts, whether or not they themselves are published authors, treat each writer/contestant as a professional writer, a peer,*Star* and respond to the story, poem, prose, or other work submitted, with courtesy, recognition, and the encouragement one would give a fellow*Heart*.

         In return, I strive to maintain the same courtesy and regard for the hosts, whether I’m friendly with them or not, when I post a contest entry, by doing the following:

*Bullet* Read and observe posting and forum guidelines and time deadlines (including posting off-topic (OT) and revisions to submitted work);

*Bullet* Read and follow prompts and length requirements when given as accurately as possible;

*Bullet* Read and observe guidelines with respect to gp contributions;

*Bullet* Ask for clarification, either as OT in the forum, or by email to the host, if I am unsure of anything in the forum, be it a prompt or rule;

*Bullet* Remember to thank the host/judges for their review and comments and, of course, a big thanks for any public award.*Blush*

         I also post public reviews to most of the contests I enter and some gps (public sometimes if permitted - or, there’s always the little ‘anonymous’ box*Wink*), and I try to read and comment upon some of the other contestants’ work, as time permits.

*Star**Heart**Star*{e:heart}*Star*

         So, as a fellow contestant, I look forward to ‘seeing’ you in some of the Splendid Contests hosted by our fellow authors here on WDC.*Smile*

         Until we 'meet' again, I hope you check out some of my favorites below*Smile*, and ...

Keep Writing!

Kate
