Literary devices such as suspense, red herrings, and cliffhangers are used extensively when writing a thriller. Thrillers often overlap with mystery stories, but are distinguished by their plots. In a mystery/thriller story, the hero must halt the plans of an enemy rather than uncover a crime. In a thriller, the crimes that must be prevented are serial or mass murders, terrorism, assassination, or the overthrow of governments. Jeopardy and violent confrontations are the standard plot elements. Excellent examples of mystery thrillers are Premonition, The Secret Window, The Silence of the Lambs, Seven, The Bourne Identity, Disturbing Behavior, The Invisible, and The Ring, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Thunderheart, and not to mention the Sherlock Holmes tales.
