The purpose of this newsletter is to highlight some of the current contests and activities on the site, help educate members on how to host contests and activities, and provide clues to submit quality entries to contests. Write to me if you'd like something in particular covered.

Submission Tracking
If you have a premium membership at WDC (or are considering getting one), one of the awesome tools available to you is Submission Tracking. Not only is it a great tool for tracking items you submit for publishing, it's a great tool for keeping track of contests you enter, or auctions you've bid on here at WDC. You can open it by going to the Navigation Panel in the left column, clicking My Account, and then clicking My Submissions. If you don't have premium, you could do something similar on a piece of paper, a calendar, or a spreadsheet. The documentation for submissions is here: "Submission Tracking System"
Keeping track of what you entered, items you donated and closing/due dates are a great way to stay organized. Was that one of your New Year's resolutions? Recording what you've entered and where not only keeps you updated on favorite contests and activities, but also shows how far you are in reaching goals you may have set for yourself. Knowing the timeline of your favorite contests and closing dates for auctions can be helpful in managing your gift point flow. You'll be able to win gift points in a contest and then pay out for your bids in an auction. 
No matter how you keep track, be it on paper or electronically, it's a good idea to try and organize your activities. It's a good way to keep your stress level down and enjoy your time on the site more. Meeting members and participating is a great part of our community. Networking is very helpful when you're ready to publish and need support. In the meantime, write on!

This one is going to be a Poem contest, write me one describing the most beautiful wolf.
The Bards Hall is a monthly contest, running from the beginning to the end of each month, with a new genre for each round. We try to make things fun and interesting, and provide prompts you might not see anywhere else.
This is a prompt-less poetry contest for high quality poetry which, for me, is poetry written in correct English and having one or more of the following characteristics: --Great depth --Great emotion -- Great flow --Uniqueness of subject or structure or presentation, a feeling of "standing out" or of "being different" --A feeling, after the poem has been read and the window closed, that the poem still lingers there somewhere in the mind.
A daily contest with fun prompts and a 10,000 gift point prize.

Yes, I like participating. Usually, I'm more likely to bid in an auction or buy raffle tickets when I like the groups or activities that are being sponsored with the event, but sometimes I just like to try my luck.
Auctions are a fun way to meet other members, especially by offering review packages or bidding on those. It's interesting to see what another person's view is or to be paired up with a package winner's port. Just a few weeks ago, I read some really good short stories that I wouldn't have found on my own simply because the writer had won a review package from me.
Lately though, I'd rather bid that offer packages. My life outside of WdC has taken on a life of its own, and it's hard to keep track of everything here.
It's great to meet different members on the site!
Free_Rip  answered: Auctions and raffles aren't my favorite, for the same reason I refuse to play monopoly, but love Othello. Or won't play Uno, but like Checkers and Connect Four Advanced. You don't really do anything - it's luck, not skill. And even if you come out of it with a prize, you don't get the same sense of acheivement you get from a contest or activity of skill.
Also, facing facts, it's kind of like a lottery; your chances aren't as good as you put in, simply because the hosts wouldn't get any profits that way. (Although a few raffles and auctions are seeing as most prizes are donated for free.)
All that said, I can see the advantages; they're great fundraisers, tickets work as rewards for many groups, and they're time-limited where review shops and other such things aren't, so you can plan them for when you have time.
So basically, they're not my personal favorite but I think they're good for the community as a whole.
pink-moon sent in: Auctions are an awesome way to raise GP's for many worthy charities around the site. I always try my best to bid on packages whenever I can in auctions that benefit my favorite charities. There is just one point of caution, though: twice in this year alone, I have had auction packages that I have won that have gone unfulfilled. Sure, I contacted the auction host, but after a while you just have to let those things go. It's important not to donate a package to a contest if you are absolutely sure you can fulfill. Better, instead, to wait and bit or donate GP's. Just my own input with regards to auctions.
It's a good idea to go into bidding in an auction or buying raffle tickets knowing the prize may or may not be delivered. Sometimes life gets too busy for a member and they forget, not intentionally. If you donate a prize, it's always good to try and fulfill it, even if it takes a while.
dmastanton replied: I have not participated in any of the raffles and/or auctions yet. I will try one or two in the 2011!
jenaywalters says: I love doing the auctions and raffles mainly because I think it is for a good cause. But I must admit some of the packages are just awesome and will make wonderful gifts to someone you want to help or just honor their efforts.
Auction wins make great gifts to fellow members!
BIG BAD WOLF Happy July 4th!  comments: I enjoy participating in raffles and auctions. First of all, you could get a nice prize. Second, you're helping out some good people. Third, it's just good fun.
