Deadlines
I'll admit it, I've missed deadlines. I've ignored reminders, or thought, I'll get to that later, until I forgot all about it. 
We typically don't intend to miss a deadline. We fully intend to get things done on time, but sometimes we forget. It could be a contest we meant to enter but forgot about that looming entry period deadline. Or it could be a promise to have a contest judged and winners announced by a deadline. (I forgot about the deadline for this very newsletter until about 16 hours before its deadline!)
There are some things that can help!
 Phone alerts. I have several alarms on my phone set for various things. They're great for waking you up (the most obvious use) but can also be used for things like reminding you about deadlines, or a reminder to sit down and work on your writing! Creating the habit can take work, like regular reminders.
Calendars. I'm big on calendars! I've tried to downsize and I only use five calendars between home and work...  I try to write down reminders before the deadline. (I typically write "Newsletter due in one week!" for my Writing.Com Newsletters. I forgot this time. Oops!) If you're going to write a reminder, give yourself time to complete the task! Write in reminders for how much time you've got left!
Leave yourself a note. Post-It notes are great for sticking a noticeable note where you'll see it, like the fridge, on your monitor, etc.
 As a contest or activity host, feel free to post a reminder message in your forum letting participants know that a deadline is drawing near. If you have a group that hosts participants (in an ongoing contest or activity, for instance), send out a reminder email.
What do you do if you miss a deadline? Well, as a hopeful participant/entrant, in most cases, I'd say you're probably out of luck. You can send a message to the host asking for an exception, but I believe in most cases, hosts are sticklers for the rules (and with good reason).  Better luck next time!
If you're a contest/activity host and you've missed a deadline, the best you can do is apologize and get to work. Get your entries judged and/or follow through with your activity. You could also offer up a consolation prize (like a few gift points, for instance?) for missing a deadline.

My last newsletter, ({nl:7634), discussed Contest Intros.
The talk about intros for contests (and their entries) struck a chord, as I've had some conversations around the site about quality intros. At one point, I was talking to a couple people about setting up some sort of place to gather to help people develop better intros. I'm too busy to run such an activity right now, and the people I talked to ended up leaving the site or moving onto other things. So I wanted to put the idea out there if anyone's looking to start a new activity.
