Flash Fiction
“It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, just as long as you have fun.” his father said to him
on the way to the game.

Billy knew that winning matters, that is why they keep score and why only the champion gets the trophy.

It was the toughest game his team had all season. South Bend was the best team in the league.

“Billy, you are an important part of this team .” the Coach said. He was trying to build up his confidence, because he had to put him in the game. It was the last inning and their right fielder was hurt and had to leave the game. There were two outs and their team had the lead, but South Bend had the tying run on third and the winning run on second. To make matters worse their best batter was up.

“Don’t let him hit it to me, don’t let him hit it to me.....” Billy was praying the prayer famous with all children that don’t want to be the one who looses the game on one bad error. And as it always happens, he hit the ball to Billy. Billy tried to do his best to catch the ball. He ran as fast as he could, but tripped and fell. As he landed on the ground the ball fell into his glove.

“What a diving catch!” the center fielder said to him, as he helped Billy to his feet.

Everybody at the game thought Billy intentionally dove for the ball, but Billy knew he only fell down and the ball caught him.
