This poem is about the pain of child abuse from the child's perspective.
Daddy’s home, it’s time to smile,
Put on a happy face for awhile.
Make sure that I have made my bed,
Listen closely to what dad has said.

He doesn’t mean it when he gets mad,
He doesn’t mean to be so bad.
If I improve just a little bit,
Tonight I know I won’t get hit.

It hurts him more then it hurts me,
This is what he has asked me to see.
I know that someday I will be tough,
When daddy’s belt just isn’t enough.

I must be good, I must really try,
I don’t want to see my sister cry.
She is my closest friend you see,
And she cries when daddy comes after me.

Someday I’ll learn to do the right thing,
And daddy won’t bring about the pain.
But daddy’s home, it’s time to smile,
And put on a happy face for awhile.
