Growing up with a father who overreacts but who still shows his love for his children. Being a marine commander, he teaches his children discipline, which he says will make them stronger. The story is told from the point of the oldest boy, Ben, as he tells his versions of the events that take place. (The narrator is Omniscent)

The multi-dimensions of the father: caring but does not tolerate anything he thinks to be "sissified." Crying deserves punishment, and anything womanly is a sin.

The view of the school. Very realistic, but it was not enough description for me.

Very emotional. There is a time to laugh, a time to cry, and a time to do both at the same time.

used much detail and humor. A very good way of getting his point and his story across. He shows the story not only from an adults point of view or a childs point of view..but of both.

It has something in it for everyone. Pat Conroy is a genius and an artist with his words.

If you dont like emotion or you feel strongly about child abuse.

Very very good book. All of Conroy's novels are considered classics.
