Summary of this Book...
Choke is the story of a sex-addict, who just might be the second coming of Christ. Victor, the main character, pretends to choke in fancy restaurants so that the people that "save" him, will feel indebted to him, and make sure he's taken care of. He uses the money that his "rescuers" send to him in order to keep his elderly mother in a good nursing home. Throughout the course of the story, Victor discovers who he really is.
I especially liked...
how Victor was a sympathetic character, although not necessarily a likable one. You could, at times, see where he was coming from, and understand his motivations.
I didn't like...
how some parts of the story weren't expanded upon as well as they might have been. There were so many pieces to this story, and not all of them were given equal attention.
The author of this Book...
used repetition of phrases and flashbacks to Victor's childhood to help the reader get inside Victor's head. Palahniuk's jumpy writing style works for this story as well, adding a quality of quirkiness to Victor's persona (as most of the story is told in the first person POV).
I recommend this Book because...
it makes you think, and laugh. This story is a good example of how one person can go wrong, when all they are trying to do is the right thing. Maybe. Victor is such a dynamic character that I recommend this book just because he's in it. *Smile*
Further Comments...
There is some graphic sex in this book, as well as other parts that might offend people. If you are easily offended, you might want to steer clear of Choke.
