Summary of this Book...
A book sectioned into categories giving a comical view of things such as parenting, plays, and dieting.
This type of Book is good for...
a great read for those longer visits to the bathroom. Or those parents with not much time on their hands so they have to read short sections at a time.
I especially liked...
The sectioned titled "Aunt Jean's Marshmallow Fudge Diet" was my absolute favorite. Although this book was written back in the '50s, the things Mrs. Kerr says about dieting still rings true in today's society. At the end of her comical view of fad diets, she begins comparring skinny women to heavier women and the differences in our marriages. From her observations, it's always the skinny women's marriages who end in divorce and with good reason - who wants to be married to a cranky rail who hasn't eatin anything since two hard-boiled eggs at 9am?
I didn't like...
Two back to back sections bored me to death. "One Half of Two On The Aisle" and "Don Brown's Body". I figure these sections bored me because it's based on the topic of drama critics and plays in the 1950's. And simply, I'm not interested in that topic.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Laugh. The final section is a funny one. I also wanted to go back and re-read the sections I enjoyed so much.
This Book made me feel...
Like I'm not alone in the battle of raising kids. It lifted my spirits.
The author of this Book...
When I think about it, she was very advanced for the time period this book was written in. I'm rather young, but my mom was born in the 50's and tells me all she had seen of women's sufferage and always reminds me that things like the battle for basic human rights are not that far behind us. Jean Kerr speaks her mind in this book, contradicting the popular theories and ideas of that time.
I recommend this Book because...
It is very funny and very true to real life. Raising kids is raising kids no matter what year your in. Same with buying a house, dieting, doing housework, and caring for pets.
I don't recommend this Book because...
There are some parts that don't translate into our time that may leave the reader a little confused.
