A true, first-hand account of the veritable mess originating in Naples, Italy and stretching all around the Globe. A mess in the form of criminal syndicates, corruption, sordidness, and political intrigue. The grim, intense, almost film-noir style of Saviano gives it a dreamlike, almost surreal twist of reality. But it is a nightmare, not a pleasant dream.

Anyone remotely interested in the doings of the modern mafia and criminal organizations in general must read this book. A few words of warning: the mobsters depicted here are not glorious, so leave those Godfather expectations behind before you pick up the book.

The lucid, dark style of the writer. It gives the book a very depressing view of life, which unfortunately is wholly appropriate here.

On the whole I liked the fragmented, blocky paragraphs, but sometimes I felt that they were a whit too chaotic.

Learn more about contemporary criminal affairs in Italy, especially where companies like Paramalat were involved.

The author is bold and daring--he does what an average citizen would never have done. He writes a book on the festering wound that's been killing his beloved birthplace. Even with a price on his head.

It is real, it is gritty, and it is contemporary.
