The ships of the Franklin Expedition to find the "Northwest passage" through the arctic are stranded, trapped in the ice for two years. The men and officers have to contend with the freezing temperatures, rotten food, and disease. Just to make things worse, something large is stalking the men. Captain Crozier has the challenge of his life to save his men from what looks like certain death.

People who like a bit of a twist on their historical fiction.

The characters, they were believable and strong, and also weak and a little evil in spots.

The way the author throws in flashbacks. It caught me off guard a little bit

The author Dan Simmons is an award winning writer of horror and dark fantasy. I haven't read all his work, but what I have, I have enjoyed.

It presents a realistic and believable alternative history, with well painted characters and a hell of an adventure.

Anyone looking for a casual read. It is a big book and it takes a little bit of commitment form the reader to get the most from it.
