Deutschland '83 is a TV series that I have just finished watching in the UK and gives a fascinating insight into the Cold War period prior to the Berlin Wall coming down. The year, as the title suggests, is 1983 and Martin, born and raised in East Germany, is persuaded to go undercover working for a general in West Germany to send secrets back to his handlers.

The drama is interspersed with newscasts which give an idea of the political situation between East & West at that time, in particular the US & Russia. There is also a fantastic 80s soundtrack which manages to avoid the cheesey music of the area and leaves us with some great tunes including the atmospheric title music.

Although, there is a 'spy' and 'cold war' theme, it is an era and genre which doesnt interest me and yet I found it compelling watching so I think anyone should give it a go, although it is in German with subtitles which might not suit some.

As I say I hadnt been interested much in the cold war politics but found it quite interesting to learn about what went on and how close it came to all out war.

When it was finished I was looking up some of the history of the era to learn more.
