I encourage you to hop on the Community Newsfeed, not just stick to your Personal Newsfeed, the default when you click Newsfeed on the left side of your computer screen. As intuey said, on your Personal Newsfeed, you will only see notes from people whose plus sign you have clicked once or twice. (FYI, twice is better as they are notified and may reward you, like I do, or even fan you back. 1 click doesn't notify them so they don't know and can't reward you. )
When you are on the Community Newsfeed, you will see notes from everyone, not just people you have favorite (1 click) or fanned (2 clicks), but from everyone who has posted on the Newsfeed (or their Notebook) that are within your rating limit. It's a great way to meet new people and see what's going on around the site.
To get to the Community Newsfeed, go to your Personal Newsfeed by clicking Newsfeed (on the left). Then along the top you will see "View the Community Newsfeed." Click that. Then just scroll, Like, comment, and start making friends!
You have your personal notebook in your portfolio. All of the people you are fans of will show up in your personal newsfeed. You'll see all posts in the community newsfeed.
