The Sky Was Electric
We were parked facing the road.
My trunk faced the ocean.
The granite seawall separated us
from the excited sea below.

The trunk was up in my car,
and we sat uncomfortably
upon trash, cd’s, books, bottles
beer cans, ice skates, and clothes.

A storm was outside our little world
complete with screaming thunder
and dancing lightning;
the night and rain was warm.

The rain drops fell around us
giving us a gentle music
as it drummed against the roof.
We were just talking then.

You called out NOW and
to my amazement and joy
you actually were right
as a massive bolt struck the sea.

We played with this,
calling out the sky.
We were something else.
We always guessed right.

I wonder now months later,
why it was all we talked about
was the future when right there
we were more free than ever.

As the storm ended we chased it.
Laughing, with wipers at full speed
we drove looking for our lightning.
Somehow it was always behind us.

Now so far away and different
I wonder if you look back
and think as I do,
how wonderful it would be
to ride one of those lightning bolts;
to be with them until they broke.
