Thank you, MEG (Third poem of nine in the TIME SERIES ) DUELLING POETS Duelling has long been a means to contest The strength of two people, to see who's the best. Opponents may use pistols, banjos or swords, But two of my sons are now duelling with words. By chance, the young one a treasure did find Among his possessions. It had been left behind By the elder, it seems, on a visit one night, And forgotten for years till it came back to light. So the younger knew the right thing to do As their Grandad had given his "watch" not to two But to the more senior of this sibling pair To return it to his brother was only fair. Being evasive and somewhat poetic The younger (called Braddock) decided on cryptic verses to see if his brother (called Geno) Could identify the watch from his poetry memo. Braddock named his rebus "A MEMORY IN TIME" A puzzle for Geno to unravel in rhyme. Lo and behold, before the week's end Geno had solved it, and took up his pen. Armed with his weapon, the denouement complete He responded with pride, revenge feeling sweet The answer he gave to Braddock, his kin Was "THE DAWNING OF TIME". It's now over to him! Braddock and Geno will battle with words The combat goes on with nouns and with verbs. These duelling poets, their talents revealed, Will fight to the end, neither will yield. Titles of Braddock's poem "A Memory in Time" and Geno's poem "The Dawning of Time" used with their permission. |
