“A Sigh, a Tear, and a Curse”

As I waited patiently for my true love,
On a cold snowy night on a wooden park bench,
Waiting for her to cross the emotional trench,
As my heart beat against my ribs like a caged dove,

I watched a poor man cross the road,
Carrying red roses as his load,
I asked to buy one and he said lovers make it worse,
And he left with a cough, a sneeze, and curse,

Later in the night (and more white), I observed a drunk,
And he was carrying pink roses, that lucky skunk,
I asked to buy one and he said with a slur lovers make it worse,
And he left with a burp, a snort, and a curse,

Then in the dark blizzard, I spotted a prostitute,
And she was carrying angelic white roses as loot,
I begged to buy one and she said lovers make it worse,
And she left with a laugh, a kiss, and a curse,

Finally the snow stopped and the horizon was aglow,
My lover appeared, coming through ankle-deep snow,
But I was no longer there, and paid heed to the verse,
When I left with a sigh, a tear, and a curse.
