Can we ever get anywhere this way?

I look at you and see

hooks, claws, latching
            in
and dragging

(oh, you desperate soul, why are you reaching
for mine? can't you see?

i've been here all along)

I watch you and wonder

(why is life so cruel? i want to know,
why can't i just take you away?)

did you know?
your soul's spilling from your eyes;
righteous rain from the torn sky...

my hands reach out

but in my embrace
i feel hollow bones and tears

and i repeat
(i'mherei'mherei'mhere)
until i'm whispering, "mirror, mirror,
save the fairest of them all."

when i close my eyes
it feels as if i'm clutching

            air

i imagine that you've flown away.
