tinel
lofty guard
over Jack Frost’s
domain
black bark
roughened with
the years, streaked
downward with malachite
moss.

stretch fingers out
across the yard........
plunge then ascend like an

silent
sovereign. Til
spring creeps ‘cross the land.
Squirrel pups chitter, bounce around
the boughs in a frantic game of tag; relay
races through the blossoming leaves. The tree

with its
embrace.
