on leaving the past behind

I turn from you and run through the deserted fields of white.
Emotions pour out in tears as my lungs expand in and out with air.
My heart pounds wildly and I continue to run on,
distressed by you.
I want to be alone and free to decide what I feel and what I think.
I want to feel pain from something other than you…
pain that makes me forget.
Blissful memories are swallowed by your egocentric actions.
The bitter wind makes me shiver from its chill.
Your selfish game drains the color from my cheeks.
Am I transparent because I don’t hide from you?
I no longer want to feel the sting of treacherous words.
Your voice is like bullets.
Your aim is dead on.
You know I cry alone, fragile and wounded.
Am I pathetic because I care so deeply for you?
I hear your heavy footsteps behind me.
Why do you follow?
I don’t want to turn around and see your face,
because it is only a reminder.
You are aware of my weakness.
But now you will know my strength.
The winds are getting louder and stronger.
My muscles scream for mercy but I continue to run on,
far away from you.
