on stages in life / relationship with parents

Mother and Father, show me your love and teach me right from wrong.
Hold me, protect me from the monsters and close the closet door.
Tell me a silly story that makes me laugh.
Teach me about God and His power and I’ll marvel.

Mother and Father, I KNOW you love me.
Protect me from the kids at school who say mean things.
Let me read you a book I got from the library today and you will laugh!
Teach me a new song, and I will sing in the talent show on Friday.

Mom and Dad, if you loved me you would let me go out tonight!
Stop trying to protect me; I can take care of myself. I just want to be alone right now.
Tell me I am beautiful and I will smile.
Teach me how to drive so I won’t have to ride the bus anymore.

Mom and Dad, Hi! I love you too…
You protect me from being alone, I miss you.
I’ll come over for dinner Friday night and tell you all about my new job.
You can show me the work you’ve done on the house and I’ll be happy for you.

Mom, did he know how much I loved him?
Please protect me from this pain. Give me a hug and never let go; I’ll never let go.
Tell me a story about dad, and we’ll laugh and cry together.
Show me the pond where he spent his time fishing on Saturdays…and we’ll remember.
