on a memory...for D.S.

Remember that last night we were together?
I made Chicken Marsala,
and we drank Pinot Grigio.
It rained.
You sang Si Volvieras a Mi for me.
You knew I loved that song.

We danced in the street in the desert rain.
It was Monsoon season.
We laughed together playing in the rain,
and our clothes were drenched,
sticking to us.
But we didn’t care
because we let go that night
in a way that we should have long ago.

You were leaving for Europe in a week,
and I was moving away.
But we didn’t think about that.
Not on this night.

I wrapped my arms around you tightly,
passionately,
but I did not kiss you goodbye.
You drove away when the rain stopped,
and I cried myself to sleep.
You shed tears too.

And now I am left to wonder,
do you ever think about that night?
Our Arizona Monsoon,
when we said our final goodbye...
