painful truth expressed

On one bent knee,
your words for me
were deep and full of grace.
A starry night,
the moon shone bright,
and I could see your face.

My thoughts were cast,
your smile fell fast.
Your heart was rent in two.
Four little words
that did disturb
Your plans for me and you.

Unexpected
plans rejected
by simple words so plain.
I tried to act
with grace and tact,
but my words caused you pain.

A starry sky,
the moon was high,
and you could see my eyes.
My painful plea,
for you and me,
was captured by my cries.

The time was wrong,
it would take long.
I wanted you to wait.
I cried that night,
but at first light
I knew it was too late.

Truth was open,
but unspoken,
I need for you to know.
As silence stirred,
you should have heard
these four words long ago…
