on compromise

In the beginning we just
played for the the music.
My passionate lyrics,
and your simple chords...
We didn't play for an audience,
we played for ourselves.

Remember when it was
only about the music?
My soothing voice,
and your accoustic guitar...
We weren't complicated,
we searched our hearts for melody.

Then somehow time was
able to change us.
My voice deceived me,
and your talent seduced you.
We compromised our simplicity
when we no longer played for us.

Somehow, our passion
for art was blurred.
My voice was supressed,
and your chords became forced.
We sold our first love
when we stopped living for the music.
