Across from the school you attended each day,
In sight of your home where you went out to play,
You grew up and worshipped, you're part of it still;
The ancient and beautiful church on the hill.
You sang in the choir and you helped ring the bell,
Joined Brownies, earned badges and learned your skills well.
You went on camp outings, and at Autumn's fade
Took part in the village Remembrance Parade.
Your children were Christened in this holy place,
With friends and relations rejoicing in grace,
The future looked bright for your young family,
No hint or foreshadow of what was to be.
That sad day, we gathered to say our goodbyes
With hymns that you loved and with tears in our eyes,
You sleep in the churchyard, we visit you still
And leave fragrant blooms by the church on the hill.
