soaking up the last bits of heat and party
knee-deep in the backyard pool
bugs drowning all around
save the moths, leave the rest

hot summer haze
heat sucking hydration, replacing blood with wine

hiding behind sunglasses
a smile looks less insane
without glassy pink eyes
half-mast and dilated

fingertips turn from smooth to ridged
better grip on reality

clothes pulled over clammy skin
breezy nap dry
all that fresh air
helps you sleep like the dead
