Autumn caught off guard
Winter Couldn’t Wait

Winter came on suddenly
powder-sugared Autumn trees
There was a light dusting of snow
On the bright orange leaves

Grownups scurried, unprepared
long lines formed for salt and chains.
Vernal season waits in the wings
Countdown: ninety days

Kids caught snowflakes on their tongues,
watched them melt ‘til they were gone.
Eager to try sledding down hills…
“When will Santa come?”
