My parent's trauma reached me before their love ever could.
I can't recall the child I was before the world shaped me.
My parents were my world, yet they were the first to reveal the world's cruelty.
I can't remember the child I was before I became so self-conscious about every move I made,
Trying to shrink my presence to be invisible.
I can't remember the child I was before I wished their arguments would remain theirs alone,
There was a moment when I realized I was merely a pawn.
I can't remember who I was before I became just another prize that could be claimed in their games,
But once they claimed me, they regarded me with the same disdain that they held for one another.
Trying to fit me into their new families and lives like an ill-fitting puzzle piece,
I became a painful echo, a sharp reminder of a past they wish to forget.
Yet when they gaze upon me, they see only each other,
Who was I? I was a child, their child.
Struggling to recall how I viewed the world, before my parents shattered it. ---O.C.W
