Two forbidden lovers
Mondauk Park

Like a herd of yellow dinosaurs
bulldozers are growling,
and just as i am certain

that they drown out all sound
in the park, you turn to me and
pop a strawberry into my mouth.

Later as we tip-toe around the mud
on the path, suddenly i realize i have
not been in love since 1995.

The crowd multiplies. There are joggers
on the grass, and picnickers on
the pavilion tables. Is there no

place where we can be alone,
for just one minute, for just one
hug, for just one kiss?

With you beside me, the noise, and the
crowd fades away. There is only you,
only us, your arms around my waist.

Your soft lips melt into mine, dancing
to one melody, two heartbeats keeping
time. If only we could get into the car

and drive all night. At dawn, with your
sleepy head upon my lap, I would wake you
and say, "We are already in Ohio."
