GOOD MORNING, MIDNIGHT

The night shift has just begun
at the Twilight Nursing Home,
another night to offer comfort,
let them know they're not alone.

They are sleeping now, except one
who has turned her nightlight on,
I go to her room to see what's wrong
and hear her sing a little song.

She smiles at me as I walk in
there's a twinkle in her eyes
"Good morning, Midnight" she said
"Is it not yet time to rise?"

"Not quite" I say as I smile back,
"The day has just begun -
you still have time to get some sleep"
(and I silently wished for some..)

I check her pulse and give a drink
and tuck her in once more;
she whispers "Good morning, Midnight"
as I go back out to check the floor.

My early bird is sleeping,
but, no - there's something wrong;
I check for pulse and find none
my midnight friend is gone.

Outside the sun is shining
but inside it's more like rain,
as salty tears flow from my eyes;
I'll not hear her voice again.
