A visit to Ground Zero eight months later...
I took a walk today,
Down desolate streets so
Painfully quiet.
Yet, if I listened closely,
There were screams of terror and
Sounds of lost souls seeking redemption.
I fought back tears
Standing in the stilled atmosphere
Of this broken and lost city.
Then through water-filled eyes,
I looked up and encountered
Such a fragile sight,
A remnant of what once was
Symbolizing strength, courage and freedom,
Looking toward heaven's doors
As they open wide
Welcoming legions of angels
Who, at last, have made it home.
