Yet another entry in the not-quite-before-my-time-but-I-was-way-too-young-for-it-to-register category (or NQBMTBIWWTYFITR, as the say...well, actually they don't - I just made it up this minute, but it might catch on...though probably it won't...OK, let's just forget I ever brought it up...sheesh!). This was performed by Cass Elliot, or "Mama Cass" as she grew to resent being called. This nickname came from her time in a group "The Mamas and The Papas" - she put herself through endless indignities in her efforts to finally be allowed to join this particular clique (they weren't keen because she had lifelong weight problems and they felt she didn't look the part), yet she pretty much carried them and is the only one that most people remember. She didn't have a long life - weight-related issues killed her at just 33 - but she made her mark in the short time she had. Damn, but the woman could sing. |
