Every morning When I watch the news

Every morning, When I watch the news

Every morning
When I watch the news
And see America

The land of my birth
Moving closer and closer
To an authoritarian nightmare

I am filled with despair
Wondering I can survive
This descent into madness
Or will it overwhelm me
And will I end up
In a prison camp
At age 70

Because I said something
Online
Or on the phone

And they were waiting
To get me
Because I am the tyrant’s
worst nightmare

a satire writer
who dares to mock
the dear leader!

My wife tells me
To cool it
To play it safe
And not stir up trouble
It ain’t worth it
I can’t fight them

She is right
But boy It is hard
To keep quiet

As I watch the daily news
Unfold

According to
a Hiterlian/Putin
playbook

soon the media
will be tamed
the universities purged
of leftist free thinkers

and the rot will be complete
as democracy dies
in plain sight
with thundersous applause
by the corrupt,
soulless Republicans

who know better
but refuse to do a damn thing
to stop it from happening!
As they have sold their souls
To the devil that is fascism.

And so as Sinclair Lewis once wrote
It Can Happen Here

Fascism will come
Wrapped in the flag
Carrying a Christian cross.

It that our fate?
I hope I am wrong
But every morning
I wonder as I drink my coffee
Contemplating the daily hell
That is the news these days.

Poets Place Theme
Theme is the glue that bonds a poem into a cohesive unit, the overriding impression which links individual specifics with a universal consciousness.

It is different from the subject. If the subject of a poem is "trees," the theme will depend on how those trees are presented. Are they covered with vibrant green buds to be the awakening of life in springtime, blanketed with blazing fall colors to reflect the changing seasons, or barren winter skeletons, as a metaphor for death? A few examples of different types of themes can be found in the following link: https://literarydevices.net/theme/

The theme of a poem may be stated explicitly in some cases, but more often it is woven intrinsically into the fabric of the composition. The poet may begin with a specific theme in mind, as Edgar Allan Poe explained in his treatise The Philosophy of Composition , or it may eventually emerge from the treatment of its subject matter during the process of composition. In the latter case, that core abstract concept will become the basis for sharpening focus in subsequent revisions to enhance the readers' aesthetic experience.

Assignment: Select specific details (factual or fictional) and appropriate language for the circumstances to compose a poem expressing your attitude about the human condition, individually or collectively.
