MHWA Prompt 1: Have you ever felt like you're missing out in life? Describe a time when you missed an experience that you believe would have been rewarding. What can we do to make sure we're not missing out on important life experiences?

Have you ever felt like you're missing out in life?

Many times. Lots of regrets and disappointments. I didn't always say yes when I should have. I was raised saying no and that worked for avoiding peer pressure and doing things I felt would have compromised my morals. BUT... I should've said yes to everything else. I wasn't a risk taker and I still am not.

Describe a time when you missed an experience that you believe would have been rewarding.

Just one? What immediately came to mind was my acceptance into the Honors Program at University of Wisconsin. I should have fought for that opportunity. I was refused a scholarship (found out only recently) and we had no money for me to go out of state. My parents had never gone to university and didn't understand. I ended up at a local college for two years and then transferred out-of-state to Kansas for my sanity. I would've been better at Wisconsin. I still dream that I could've graduated with a degree in Geology and Scandinavian Studies at the time of the North Sea oil boom.

What can we do to make sure we're not missing out on important life experiences?

Learn how to say yes. Learn how to set obligations and fears aside. The mundane will be there tomorrow but a chance to do something special may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Also... be aware. Take time to notice children, flowers, sunsets. There's great beauty in the ephemeral. If you do not take the time it may not be there tomorrow.

Tonight the southern sky was glowing pink as the sunset was a brilliant orange turning purple in the northwest. I took a photo of a crescent moon among pink clouds. It was but a moment that will never be again. "One does not put one's feet in the same river twice.'
