Uncovered
It’s an ordinary chair
with a sturdy brocade
made to withstand
a thousand seatings.
The fabric doesn’t show
the spots that have been pawed,
chewed and clawed
by an undisciplined cat.
This chair will last forever.
I hate this chair.
So, I hid it under a throw
a very tasteful yardage
of linen with a hint of ruffle
that the cat hated and swore to destroy.
But I was decided and did not waver
even when the cat attacked and salivated
clearly proving she could eat this slipcover
(if she wanted to)
And to prove her indifference to my pleadings
She slipped under the cover
coiled her body to preserve heat
and waited in the dark
for someone to come sit on her.
