What Defines Art, Anyway?
PROMPT March 12th
Imagine you had to create an art piece for a gallery or museum. What would you create?
Maybe I would incorporate a multi-media collage. Perhaps I could call upon all the crafts I’ve ever dabbled in, knitting, crochet, embroidery, photography, batik, sewing, writing, and then somehow insert some live plants.
I couldn’t look any crazier than this. Michael Landy in Great Britain took a few years to destroy all his possessions to refute consumerism. Then he took all those possessions and made an art installation. Then destroyed it. He named it ‘Break Down’.
And then I heard today about an auction for a digital only artwork - something about bits, blockchain, digital only. The masterpiece sold for about $70 million. Amazing. When I look at his ‘work of art’, I think, “I could do that!” And then I think “What crap!”. Another crazy idea of art.
