Trip to the Country
Thirteen was an awkward year
Certainly not the year of awareness
Not the year to understand another world
The world in which you were born

Not a year of patience for the miles
The monotony of the humming tires
Fidgeting in the back seat
With a disagreeable brother

Thirteen was an awkward age
For meeting the people of your childhood
An awkward impression to leave
On eyes that would never see me again

More than wishing away the boredom
the chalky taste of well water
Or the idle chatter of old people trying
To wish their memories back to life

I wish I had not been so awkward
For missing you wears a hole in me
And these memories are patches
That I wish I had more of
