Autumn Music
We were childhood friends,
a bonding brought about
by proximity of neighborhood and age.
Held together by a need to belong
and the exuberance of youthful feet
skipping through November’s leaves
that lay lifeless and brown.
We were the music
in those colorless days.
In my autumn of years, I know
a loneliness that echoes.
It’s a cold wind that stirs
the lifeless through memories.
It reminds me of great loss
and offers no restoration ahead.
My body complains about the cold,
speaking out in groaning and
the crepitus of morning.
