A Tasty Haste
summers were endless days of white light
that turned my arms and face brown
that turned the swing’s seat into blisters on my thighs
and made the pears blush red on the tree
how hard it was to wait for them
to wait for softened flesh and subtle flavor
those that hung low to my hand’s reach
plucked while tart and unready
they puckered my face and
sharpened my teeth with their biting
their unripe piquant juice flowing
a stream of tangy triumph on my chin
