A response to Brian about feedback. "A bit like 5 stars attached to a 3 star review. If you aren't gobsmacked by the writing a 4.5 or 4 will do. I'd tell newbies here to read 10 or 20 poems (most of mine are short) and read reviews before reviewing/rating. A day or two should be enough (short stories is a different issue). And then you wade in and learn by doing. I don't submit anymore because trying to figure out what folks are looking for is frustrating. "New, Cutting Edge, Not Yesterday's Iowa Poem!" means nothing to me. An editor will publish what he likes, what his audiences wants, or 'stuff' submitted by friends or well-known writers. Same here at WdC. I've won contests clueless what I did right. Received no feedback (as in not-a-word) as to what I'm lacking to even place, after multiple entries. My insecurity makes me suspect that I've offended people, that they're trying to ignore me, or that that 5.0 is because they have a quota to meet making me question their sincerity." Just before noon and a pleasant calm sunny 68 degrees. It'll be over 80 later. I'm not as calm. I woke up early but didn't get out of bed until it was too late to visit freinds at the cafe. Travis will visit and although I won't be ready it's important that I make some effort and beg him to revisit this weekend. Yesterday was a nice diversion but reality isn't quite so nice. 78° at 3:33. Travis visited me. He writes short stories so I read him my list of prompts. He really like the one that's getting the most votes... so maybe that's resolved. All 9 choices have received at least one vote. I got a bit of cleaning done. I'll see Trav soon... maybe Sunday. It did hit 80 today but it's back down to 77 at 8:00 on its way down to the 50s. I'm hoping for a decent night's sleep. 4619 |
