The Middle
Middle school
we were caught in the middle
between the groups and cliques
where a taunting name sticks
to you like an identity
and all we had was poetry
Memory hurts
not because I remember
their names or their faces
it’s not these my mind traces
but when choosing a side to
be on, I denied you
So long ago
long enough to forgive myself?
No, I am haunted by my cowardice
the fear that made me powerless
instead of words that would defend
I simply said “she’s not my friend”.
