Do As I Say, Not As I Do

Proverbs 3:1-2 NIV
My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.

Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs; it may have been addressed to his son who would succeed him on the throne, (Rehoboam) or to students that Solomon was teaching. Either way, it is an exhortation to Walk in the Ways of the Lord.

Unfortunately, Rehoboam didn't do so well in that department. Whether it was a "Do as I say, not as I do" example set by his father, or Rehoboam's own hard-headedness, the advice went unheeded. Israel became a divided kingdom, and eventually was overthrown.

We can learn from this example. Remember the teachings of our elders, and inherit God's promises; or do our own thing and pay the consequences. I've done it both ways; although not always easier, it has always been better to keep to the ways of the Lord.
