Yes, most children should be given aptitude tests and standardized tests are useful to gauge where they are at.

Unfortunately, children are not standard size boxes meant to be stacked in a warehouse, to be used up when needed by society and thrown out if substandard or useless.

It's why the former middle class is outraged. They were standardized and fed like beloved chickens. Now they run around after their heads were cut off. No one welcomes feeling disposable.

So, yes, I think that tests suit the average child in a mundane society. BUT... they don't promote brilliance or recognize individuality.

I strongly believe in IndividualEducationPlans for all children... and adults.

And aptitude tests help educators and parents to recognize unknown gifts. In my case, spatial acuity. However, skills can be acquired regardless. I don't have natural language learning skills but I speak 5 languages... poorly and I have class today in a sixth.

My IEP for 2023 is "Learn whatever I have to learn". That includes negotiating a personal relationship, nurturing it, being grateful for it. Language and culture are a big part of that.

Travel has been a key over the past 14 years but this year I need to switch focus.

My language goal is A2 level. That means being able to function in society with rudimentary knowledge of the language. I'm not making good progress.

Today I may just ask the teacher to cover whatever she thinks is essential. My ability to pronounce sounds and use the right tone has improved but I can't seem to focus on studying.

But should standardized test be used for promotion? Mostly, yes. I can only get to B2 by getting to A2. skipping steps isn't helpful; however... many units are more... or less... important to my particular situation and strengths. I need to know names of foods, time units, colors... how to converse, "I want..., I need..., Please..." are essential in relationships. I needed "Do you have..." yesterday at the flower market.

But any tests shouldn't be used to punish or shame anyone. Tests don't work for some people any better than standardized teaching methods. Severe gaps or talents are missed and years are wasted trying to make human boxes for a way of life that no longer exists.
