“Be like the willow”, the fable advises
“and you’ll weather any storm.”
“Learn to give, to bend and bow
compromise does not deform.”

The oak stands straight, arms up, defiant,
the epitome of ingrained pride.
The winds may howl round his trunk,
but he knows he’s rooted deep and wide.

The willow’s roots are long, thin fingers,
their pathways serpentine and nervous,
roaming far from the supple trunk,
but keeping always near the surface.

When the storm blows, cries and rages,
when the rain upon the earth does pound,
the oak stands straight, arms up, defiant,
the willow lays upon the ground.
