20230526 Latest Lesson

So, after a couple of weeks of me getting my head together, we had our latest lesson last night. What we did was go over the short story each person had written. They had half an hour each. They had already read one another's work and had been helping each other, so I was sort of a moderator and devil's advocate.

What about character construction, you ask. Well, they watched some more videos and did that themselves. I was no longer needed. These three really want to write. I am truly impressed.

Anyway...

The father still writes a little too formally, but he's on track.

The mother has "it". Her story was great.

The daughter still over-uses description and it is still list-like.

All 3 have their grammar and punctuation down. In the past few weeks, they even got hold of a copy of Strunk & White! Yay!

I got them to pull out their first pieces and we looked at how much they had improved in just a couple of months of focus.

We're going to do one more session, where I'll help them each get into the actual thing they want to write, and then it'll be just me on call.

My work there is almost done.

While it might not seem like much, the fact they were so happy and made me feel like I had done something positive was what I needed at this particular moment in my life. And the father said it had brought the family together better than anything else in the past couple of years. They had struggled in lockdown.

One little positive in my life. I'll take it.
